Congratulations on your new eFoil. You have just bought one of the most exciting pieces of watercraft on the market, and the moment you get up on foil for the first time, you will understand why riders describe it as flying over the water. Before that first flight, there are a few things every new owner should know. Your eFoil is a real powered watercraft with a large lithium battery on board, so a little knowledge up front keeps you legal, keeps your gear lasting for years, and keeps everyone around you safe. Here is what to keep in mind after the board is in your hands.
Registration
Your eFoil is motorized, and that changes how the law sees it. The Lift eFoil is effectively the smallest personal watercraft you can own, and under Florida law a motorized vessel operated on public waters must be titled and registered. This is the same requirement that applies to a boat or a jet ski. If you ride in Florida, plan to register the board before you put it in the water.
Everything you need to do it is already in the box. Inside your eFoil board you will find an envelope containing the title to the board. Each board also carries a Hull Identification Number, or HIN, stamped on it, exactly like a boat. The HIN is the unique fingerprint of your eFoil, and you will use it on the registration paperwork.
To register in Florida, take the title and your identification to your local county tax collector office, which handles vessel titling and registration for the state. They will issue your registration and your decal. Keep the documentation somewhere safe, because you may be asked to show proof of registration on the water.
If you are purchasing outside of Florida, please research your local laws and regulations before your first ride. Registration rules for electric foils and small powered watercraft vary widely from state to state and country to country. Some jurisdictions treat an eFoil exactly like a boat, some have a power or length threshold, and a few have no requirement at all. A quick call to your state boating authority is the fastest way to know where you stand. If you are ever unsure, reach out to us and we will point you in the right direction.
Battery
The battery is the heart of your eFoil, and it is a genuinely powerful piece of technology. The Lift full range pack holds about 2.2 kWh of energy, enough for up to roughly 90 minutes of ride time, and it recharges to 80 percent in a little over an hour. That kind of energy density is what makes the ride possible. It also means the battery deserves real respect. There are risks associated with charging and storing any large lithium battery, and every person who rides your board should understand them.
A few habits cover the vast majority of safe operation:
- Use only the Lift charger that came with your board. Third party chargers are one of the most common causes of lithium battery problems.
- Charge on a hard, non flammable surface such as concrete or tile, away from anything that can catch fire, and never on carpet, a bed, or a couch.
- Stay nearby while it charges. Do not charge the battery unattended and do not leave it charging overnight while you sleep.
- Let a hot battery cool down before you plug it in. Coming straight off a long ride, give it time to return to room temperature first.
- Store it cool, dry, and at a partial charge. For long term storage, a battery held around half charge in a climate controlled space lasts far longer than one stored full or empty in a hot garage.
- Inspect before every charge. If you ever see swelling, cracking, corrosion, a burnt smell, or any physical damage, stop using the battery and contact us right away. Do not charge a damaged pack.
Because the battery is so central to safe ownership, we have a Battery Safety Document that should be read and signed by every client. It is short, it is plain language, and it is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself, your family, and anyone you let borrow the board. If you have not received or signed yours yet, ask us and we will get it to you.
Maintenance
Taking care of your Lift eFoil is one of the most important parts of owning an electric surfboard, and the enemy is salt water. Salt is relentless. Left on the board it works its way into connectors, hardware, and seals, and over time it corrodes the exact parts that keep your eFoil running and watertight. The good news is that prevention is simple and only takes a few minutes.
After every saltwater session, rinse the entire board with fresh water. Pay special attention to the mast, the fuselage, the propulsion unit, and every electrical connector. Rinse the battery compartment and the contacts, then dry everything thoroughly before you store the board or seat the battery. A few more habits that pay off over the life of the board:
- Keep the connectors clean and protected. Follow Lift's guidance on cleaning the battery and mast contacts, and use the recommended dielectric grease where the manual calls for it.
- Check your hardware. Periodically confirm the mast, wing, and fuselage screws are clean and properly torqued to spec. Salt and vibration can loosen fasteners over time.
- Store out of direct sun and heat. UV and a baking hot car or garage are hard on the board, the wings, and especially the battery.
- Rinse the wings and mast separately if you break the board down, and dry them before they go back in the bag so moisture does not sit against the carbon and the hardware.
When in doubt, follow the maintenance schedule in your Lift owner's manual. Treat the board like the precision equipment it is and it will reward you with seasons of trouble free riding. If anything ever feels off, we are a Lift dealer and we are here to help you service it.
Carrying Your Board
An eFoil is not heavy for what it is, but it is awkward, the wings are sharp, and the components are expensive, so how you carry it matters. There are a few good ways to move your board:
- By hand, fully assembled. For short trips from the truck to the water, carry the board under your arm with the mast and wing facing away from your body so you do not catch a shin on the foil. A second set of hands makes this easy and safe.
- In a padded board bag. For transport and storage, a dedicated eFoil or board bag protects the deck, the rails, and the carbon wings from dings and from sun.
- On a cart or dolly. A beach cart with large wheels is the easiest way to move a fully rigged board across sand or a long parking lot without straining your back or risking a drop.
- Broken down into components. Separating the board, mast, and wings makes everything lighter and easier to handle, and it is the smart way to pack the eFoil into a vehicle or for longer journeys.
Whichever method you choose, mind the foil wings. They have a fine edge, and the two most common ways people damage an eFoil are dropping it and banging the wing on a hard surface while carrying it.
Air Travel
This is the one rule that surprises new owners, so plan for it before you book a trip. Traveling on a commercial passenger jet with the eFoil battery is prohibited. This is not a Lift policy or a Luxury Surf policy. It is aviation safety law. Lithium batteries above 160 watt hours are not allowed on passenger aircraft in carry on or checked baggage, and the Lift battery holds between roughly 1,000 and 2,200 watt hours depending on the pack. That is many times over the limit, so no airline will accept it.
The board, the mast, and the wings are not the problem. The battery is. So to bring your eFoil to the kind of extravagant, far flung places that make this sport so special, the move is simple: fly with the board and have the battery shipped separately. Lithium packs this size travel as Class 9 dangerous goods and must go by ground freight through a carrier set up to handle them, not on a plane and not in standard parcel mail. Build the shipping time into your plans, because dangerous goods ground freight is slower than overnight shipping.
If you are planning a trip and want help arranging battery shipping or sourcing a battery at your destination, get in touch. We do this regularly and can save you the headache.
Ride With Confidence
Owning an eFoil is one of the best decisions you will make as a watersports enthusiast. Register it, respect the battery, rinse it after every saltwater ride, carry it carefully, and remember that the battery stays on the ground when you fly. Do those few things and your Lift eFoil will give you years of flying over the water.
Luxury Surf is a proud Lift Foils dealer. If you have any questions about your board, your battery, registration, service, or travel, reach out to our team. We ride what we sell, and we are here for the whole journey, not just the sale.
